Overview

Leyv Ha-Ir, Hebrew for Heart of the City, is a vibrant, urban Reconstructionist congregation located in Center City, Philadelphia.  With approximately 75 members, our progressive congregation fosters an open, caring and inclusive community rooted in Jewish values. Geared toward adults, we seek to enhance our Jewish identities through communal study, worship services, holiday celebrations, and social action.  We do not have a building or a Hebrew School, but instead meet at various city locations, including the Ethical Society on Rittenhouse Square and at members’ homes. We are an affiliate of Reconstructing Judaism.

Job Summary

Leyv Ha-Ir is looking for an organized, reliable, and flexible individual to assist with bookkeeping and other computer-related administrative tasks.

Responsibilities and duties

Working from home but reporting regularly to a designated member of the governing board (Council), the administrative assistant will:

  • Perform assigned bookkeeping tasks including data entry for revenues and expenses
  • Maintain membership, contact and electronic distribution lists; generate mailing labels as needed
  • Generate and distribute individualized letters related to Yahrzeits and tax deductions
  • Monitor the email inbox and distribute contents to appropriate committee chairs and congregants for action/replies
  • Assist with distribution of various online and mailed communications
  • Perform other administrative tasks as assigned.

Qualifications and Skills

The ideal candidate must be detail-oriented and able to work independently. In addition, he/she will have:

  • An understanding of bookkeeping practices
  • A working knowledge of Quickbooks
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Good oral and written communications skills
  • Familiarity with Constant Contact is desirable

Additional Requirements

This is a work from home, contract position. The candidate must have his/her own up-to-date computer equipment and a robust Internet connection in order to perform the necessary tasks. Weekly task pick-up and drop-off will be in Center City, Philadelphia.

Hours and Pay

We anticipate this position will require no more than 250 hours per year on a 12-month basis.  However, the work is cyclical, with more time required July through October and around Passover, and fewer hours at other points in the year.

Pay will be hourly and commensurate with experience.
